With scores level at the end of ninety minutes, Colorado found the net in extra time to be crowned MLS Champions for the first time.

FC Dallas were favourites going into the game with a 3-0 hammering of LA Galaxy to their name in the Western Conference Final. Dallas may have had expectations of lifting the trophy especially after MLS MVP, David Ferreira, opened the scoring on 31st minute. A cross came from Chavez on the right flank and it only took a toe for David Ferreira to find himself in between two defenders and find himself on the score sheet.

With Dallas leading by one goal to nil, Colorado didn't seem to be in any rush to change their game plan. Most of the first half consisted of route one football by both teams. To make matters worse the Colorado Rapids did not look like a side with two leading goal scorers as a strike partnership.

Casey, with 15 goals to his name, waited until the second half to bring his total for the season equal to strike partner Omar Cummings. Jamie Smith showed Ugo Ihemelu a clean set of heels before firing his cross left footed into the area. Conor Casey took his shot first time and in spite of Kevin Hartman making the save, Casey was there at a second attempt to strike the ball past a helpless Hartman in the FC Dallas net.

Jeff Larentowicz looked to take Colorado into the lead with a superbly hit freekick straight off the training ground, but was denied by Hartman, who made amends from not holding the ball off of Conor Casey’s earlier strike. In the dying moments of normal time, Colorado were awarded a corner. Referee, Baldomero Toledo, did not allow play to restart in spite of Colorado winning the corner and the game went into extra time, much to the frustration of half the BMO Field.

Omar Cummings had been ineffectual for the most part of the game and did not seem too surprised to see his number appear above the head of the fourth official just eight minutes into extra time. Cummings was replaced by Macoumba Kandji, which proved to be a master stroke by former Watford coach Gary Smith.

Kandji tested the Dallas back line with a series of step-overs and found a way into the Dallas box thanks to a diagonal ball from Conor Casey. Kandji nutmegged Benitez and managed to get a shot away which took a fortuitous deflection off of George John and into the top corner.

Colorado were in front for the first time and the scoreline stayed at 2-1 until the final whistle. George John tried to make amends at the other end but his shot was saved by Pickens who was at full stretch.

The celebrations went well into the cold Canadian night for the Colorado Rapids as they picked up their first ever MLS Cup in the first MLS Cup Final held in Canada.
