Watford Football Club has today announced the signing of Mark Yeates from Sheffield United and although his name may be unknown to many Hornets fans, this Irishman’s name is all too familiar with me.

Colchester United has always been my second team since I was a child, due to my father having lived there for a number of years. It was when Yeates signed for the U’s in July 2007 that I became interested in his career. When watching my first live U’s match after his signing and seeing Yeates’s technique and ability, he instantly became my favourite player for the U’s. Shortly after witnessing a few of his superb performances, Yeates worked his way onto the back of my Colchester replica shirt which was freshly bought for the 07/08 season. I still go to watch Colchester around three to four times each season, obviously when Watford aren’t playing!

After scoring a total of 8 goals during the 07/08 season, Yeates established himself as a key member of the team. Another 12 goals were added to his tally the following season which was certain to stimulate interest from bigger clubs and on the 26th of June 2009, it did. Middlesbrough completed the signing of my hero for the sum of £500,000 which was an absolute bargain in my view. I was slightly disappointed but realised he was bettering his career, so was happy for him. I still tracked his appearances and goals after he departed, as any fan would.

When my father rang me from work at roughly 4pm today, he informed me that according to the official website, Mark Yeates had signed for Watford. At first I thought he was simply pulling my leg but after double checking, a big wide smile appeared upon on my face. I can honestly say that no other Watford fan will be as delighted as I am with this signing. Welcome to Vicarage Road Mark!
