Radlett's racing supremo Alex Jones says he is determined to be a Formula One driver despite making a late start to his career on the track.

The 20-year-old currently competes in Formula Vee with AHS motorsport, most recently finishing 21st and 19th in two races at Brands Hatch in April.

Jones said: “I enjoy racing so much and am a real petrolhead at heart. I don’t want to lie, my ambition is to race in F1, but it's going to be difficult to get there. Nevertheless I will keep trying.”

Jones says he tried racing when he was young and has had his heart set on it ever since.

“My dad took me to Letchworth’s Teamworks Karting when I was young. I can’t remember my first go, but I’m guessing I was around eight years old.

“He took me for an arrive and drive session. I enjoyed it so much and I thought I really want a career in this.

“But only last year did I have a go in some competitive karting in the CSMA North London Karting.

“I know I was quite late starting, but I thought I was too late to continue with karts and I just wanted to go into cars.”

Jones, who says former F1 driver David Coulthard is his childhood hero, hopes to raise more awareness of Formula Vee and encourage support for the competition.

He said: “I want more people to come and watch the Vee races, it is so much fun.

“And fun for people to watch. The car I drive is like the one used in Formula One but smaller.”

Up next up for Jones is a race at Silverstone in the Vee on August 24.
