Watford Harriers’ William Jarvis opened his 2014 track and field season with two medals and several personal bests at the Oxford City Open Throws competition.

What makes Jarvis’ achievements even more impressive is that the teenager was originally a sprinter and has only been training in throwing events for less than a year.

Despite that obvious disadvantage, Jarvis threw a personal best of 24.99m in the Under-13 discus to win the competition.

Jarvis hopes to represent Hertfordshire later this year and the win puts the Ashlyn’s School pupil into the top five of the UK rankings for Under-13 discus.

In the javelin Jarvis faced stiff competition but still managed a personal best distance, as well as a top UK athletics grading of 32.14m, to take bronze.

Any junior athletes aged ten and above interested in joining Watford Harriers are invited to attend trial sessions between 7 and 8pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Woodside Stadium.

The club is running a minors competition on Sunday April 6 at 10am (registration from 9.30am), details of which can be found on the Watford Harriers website.

Regular training for minors (up to age 12) is on Sundays at Woodside Stadium between 10.30-11.30am.
