Haydn McCullen needed a play-off to beat his close friend Bradley Moore to the Carris Trophy at Moor Park Golf Club last week.

Cullen, of Delamere Forest, Cheshire, beat his England foursomes partner Moore (Kedleston Park, Derbyshire) to the Boys’ Under-18 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

The duo finished level-par 288 on Thursday of last week after a two-shot swing on the final hole, before returning to the first once more to decide the champion.

“Winning doesn’t feel as good as it should because it was against Bradley,” said McCullen. “We are close friends and foursomes partners for England. He also got unlucky on the play-off hole but I’m pleased to have won.”

The action had been suspended for 90 minutes on Thursday afternoon due to thunder and lightning and another storm was on its way during the play-off.

The Hazard Salver for the best performance by a player aged under 16 on January 1 went to Malaysia’s Bryan Teoh Wiyang on 297, beating Ryan Cox from the Warley Park club in Essex by a shot.
