Tring Athletic moved up to fourth in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division after winning 2-0 at Ampthill Town on Saturday to secure their second win in a week.

The game proved to be something of an anti-climax after Tuesday’s victory over Hoddesdon and it took Athletic 15 minutes to settle down and create some clear-cut chances.

Stewart King looped a header just wide from a right-wing cross for Tring, whilst Kevin McManus also saw an effort deflected wide. From the resulting corner, captain Chris Salmon had a shot cleared off the line, seeing a follow-up effort fly over the bar via a deflection.

Tring took a deserved lead after 43 minutes though. Good work from Trevor Gibbs freed Chris Vardy, with the forward controlling before firing home from 12 yards.

The visitors began the second half slowly but, after overcoming an early scare, went on to control the remainder of the game.

Though Tring struggled to create many clear-cut chances, they were still able to add a second with nine minutes remaining.

Good work from Taylor Collins found Greg Deer, who was brought down inside the penalty area as he prepared to take a shot.

Gibbs then converted the penalty with ease, before Tring were awarded another spot-kick for handball against Daniel Olaloran.

This time Gibbs could not beat Ampthill Town goalkeeper Tom Gowans but the points were already safe.

Leverstock Green have made progress in two cup competitions this week, following their FA Cup success with a 4-0 Premier Division Cup win at Ampthill Town.

A Liam Hind brace – with the second from the penalty spot – followed first-half goals from Louis Bircham and David Sobers, securing Levy’s place in the second round.

Leverstock had previously advanced to the FA Cup first qualifying round on Saturday, following a 2-1 win at Harefield United in the preliminary round.

Top-scorer Hind got the opener after 33 minutes, profiting from a defensive mix-up between Hare’s goalkeeper Matt Elston-Bull and defender Ryan Egan, before seizing on a loose ball to tap into the empty net.

Hosts Harefield found an equaliser 11 minutes after the break, with Mark Smith the beneficiary.

The leveller also had an element of fortune about it, Smith pouncing to convert after a ricochet left him with an unguarded net to aim for.

Not to be denied, Leverstock sealed their place in the next round in the 77th minute, Ryan Upton netting for the away side.

Levy are at Tring Athletic tomorrow (Saturday), before travelling to Wembley on Tuesday.

Tring have a trip to Hillingdon Borough on the same night.
