West Herts came up short in their first-ever National League fixture, losing 2-0 to Cambridge City at the New Field on Sunday.

Cambridge, who just beat West Herts to a place in the National League two years ago, started brightly and could have been ahead early on had it not been for Dave Soulsby in the West Herts goal.

The Stages manufactured a couple of chances of their own; Ed Beak and Max Webster both going close.

City eventually took the lead when, from their second short corner, Ross Hayward took advantage of a failed clearance to slot home the opener.

Max Webster was yellow carded for a rash challenge, meaning the Stags had to take a back seat in order to prevent further damage.

On the hour, the points were made safe for Cambridge when Sam O’Shea diverted home from a right-wing cross.

The Stags were unable to find a route back into the game but were able to take heart from the fact they were far from outplayed by last season’s fourth-placed side in the National League.

West Herts return to action on Saturday when they travel to Old Loughtonians at 2pm.

The club’s other sides begin their league season this weekend. For more information, visit: www.watfordhockey.hitssports.com
