Abbots Langley's Hannah Johnson has won her first senior call-up to Team England for the Commonwealth Championships in Edinburgh next month.

Johnson was rewarded with a place in the team after winning gold in the senior female +73kg division at the recent British Tae Kwon Do National Championships in Manchester.

The 22-year-old said: “It was definitely a surprise. The selectors called me up and I was really happy but it came as quite a shock because there is a lot of tough competition out there. I guess winning at the nationals obviously helped my cause.”

Johnson has produced consistently at the national championships with two silvers and a bronze prior to her triumph this season.

She is currently ranked 114th in the world and has spent time this year training with the Great Britain team in Manchester, along with a spell in Hungary working alongside Olympians during the run-up to the national championships.

Johnson has targeted winning a medal in the upcoming Commonwealths and is heading into the event on a high after her latest success.

She said: “I want to win a medal but it will just be an amazing experience to take part in regardless of whether I can achieve this.”
