Three Rivers Young Blades fencing club celebrated winning a team gold medal at their latest youth team event.

Five TRYB teams headed to the University of Hertfordshire on Sunday to take part in the Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire competition.

The Under-16 ‘A’ team of Michael Lown, Jasmine Porter and Kishan Sisodiya claimed the gold medal by beating a team from Verulam School in St Albans in a close-fought final.

Chairman Mike Ellis said: “Our young fencers are developing a strong reputation across the south of the country for team fencing and this was the third gold medal that they have won this year.

“This win was particularly gratifying as the TRYB team were one of the youngest competing at this age level but some very thoughtful and skilled fencing saw them go through seven team bouts undefeated in a very long day.

“A great deal of this run of success is due to our coach Dominique Szokolovics, the current British senior champion and England team captain for the forthcoming Commonwealth championships, who has installed a great team ethic where they all support each other as well as improving their individual technique.”

The Under-12 ‘A’ team of Phoebe Dolan, Finlay Graham and Raffi Pollitt won silver in their category, only going down to a narrow defeat in the final against a team from Cambridge Swords.

The club practice every Monday at the Royal Masonic School in Rickmansworth and have regular courses for beginners aged seven to 17, with a highly qualified set of coaches.

The next beginners course starts on November 3.
