Fullerians extended their lead at the summit of the London North West Three table by beating Grasshoppers 27-12 on Saturday.

Third-placed Grasshoppers provided a stern challenge but Fullers put them to the sword in the opening minutes when a catch and drive from the lineout saw second row Liam Boyd crash over for the opening score.

And it was not long before Fullers extended their lead. Fly-half Luc Jacobs found himself in acres of space after some good work by the forward pack and outpaced the covering defence to score. Craig Duncan added the extras.

Fullers continued to pressure a below-par Grasshoppers defence and were rewarded for their efforts when Duncan converted a penalty.

But from there Fullerians’ intensity levels dropped off and their opponents were allowed to cross the whitewash for the first time. And the visitors scored again before the break to haul themselves back into the contest, trailing 15-10 at the break.

The second half saw Fullerians come under pressure early on but they held firm to shut the visitors out.

From that point on Fullers took the initiative; Matt Bushell going over from short range after a series of pick and drives.

Using the wind well, the visitors kicked for territory and were awarded a second converted try of the match in the corner after a well-worked move by their back line.

Fullers also kicked intelligently and got themselves into good field positions. Second-row Liam Boyd crossed only to be penalised for a double movement.

However, the points were wrapped up when man-of-the-match Simon O’Brien picked up from the scrum and crashed over to score Fullers’ fourth try and seal a bonus-point win.

Fullers’ head coach Rich Hoskins said: “It was very pleasing to win with a bonus point against a very good Grasshoppers team.

“We lost our composure midway through the first half but got it back in the second to take the game out of sight and go clear at the top in this very competitive league.”
