A father and son from Watford have won the Lawn Tennis Association’s National Family Championships in Dudley.

Lee, 52, and Patrick Evans, who has since turned 14, beat their Oxfordshire-based opponents 6-4, 6-3 to take the title in the west Midlands.

The pair are both members at West Herts and Watford Lawn Tennis Club and reached the finals having defeated local opposition last April.

“I was not really aware of the competition, to be honest,” said Lee. “But I should have known about it as I am on the Hertfordshire Tennis Committee and there is a chap who is also on there who has won it with each of his three sons.”

The competition has two categories – one open to all ages and one for children under the age of 14. Within the two categories there are separate competitions for father and son, father and daughter, mother and son and mother and daughter.

And whilst Lee admits he and his son have not played together frequently until recently, he is now hoping to defend his title this year. “I do not know if we will be able to compete this year,” admitted Lee. “Patrick was 14 a few days ago and I am not sure if it is for 14 and under or if 14 is the cut-off point – I will have to have a look at the rules.

“We would certainly like to defend our title, in my view you should always defend your title.”
