Fullerians secured a bonus-point 28-5 win against Welwyn to extend their lead at the top of London North West Three on Saturday.

In a clash of first versus second, neither side gave an inch in a free flowing encounter.

It was the visitors who cracked first following a fine Fullers move, finished off expertly by winger Ben Meyers and converted by Craig Duncan.

Welwyn finally began to click and were rewarded for their persistence with a try from a rolling maul.

Nothing could split the sides at the interval but a more direct approach from Fullerians after the break was to prove too much for the visitors.

Number eight Simon Lye crashed over for an early score in the second half for another converted try.

Welwyn’s first-half exertions appeared to have taken its toll on them and Fullers took advantage through the rampaging run of centre Duncan to stretch their lead to 14 points.

The final blow was struck when Fullers won a scrum against the head and earned a penalty try from an enormous effort from the triumphant pack.

The comprehensive win avenged their defeat to Welwyn in the reverse fixture in October.

“It was a tense first half and we played into the hands of a very good Welwyn team,” said Fullers coach Rich Hoskins. “The second half we played more directly and to our strengths and the scores came.

“Our lineout was not as slick as it has been but our scrum was magnificent.

“A bonus-point win against second placed Welwyn is a satisfying day in the office.”
