Watford demolished bottom of the league Ickenham 51-0 to secure a play-off spot in Herts/Middlesex Two on Saturday.

The signs were ominous from the outset for the hosts when lock Dave Kingsford showed a clear pair of heels to score a superb early try.

Watford were threatening again almost immediately after the restart and captain Martin Lee scored a quick-fire double thanks to powerful and enterprising work from the forwards.

The bonus-point try, which secured their play-off berth, came when brothers Andy and Martin Lee combined well to send Tom McGee over for his first try and soon after Andy got in on the act with a trademark rampaging run.

McGee scored right on the stroke of half time to earn the visitors an emphatic 32-0 lead at the break in what was turning out to be a disastrous afternoon for Ickenham.

Watford rang the changes in a rather disjointed second-half performance but after weathering a prolonged spell of attacking forays from the hosts, Jon McClennon’s clinical finish knocked the stuffing out of Ickenham.

Not long after Andy Lee had added his second try, Kingsford completed the rout from a superb team move to bring the game to a close at 51-0. Watford’s next game is at home against Cheshunt in the semi final of the Herts Presidents Trophy.

There was also victory for Watford’s Seconds, who recorded an impressive 17-8 win against Letchworth.

Watford fell behind early on in the contest through an unconverted try but soon hit back through Jack Bennett. However, the extras were not added.

A penalty shortly before half time put Letchworth in front at the interval but Watford improved in the second period and took control of the contest.

The Watford pack became dominant and they scored 12 points without reply to secure victory.
