West Herts Hockey Club played out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Teddington in their penultimate National League Conference East fixture on Sunday.

Having secured their top-flight status a week ago, there was little riding on the game for the Stags, whereas Teddington needed the points for survival.

And that was reflected in the fact the home side took the lead after just four minutes from a short corner.

However, the advantage was held for just six minutes as Dan Webster soon levelled for West Herts. After embarking on a solo run, Webster fired home with a reverse stick strike.

The game ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the opening half, with Teddington retaking the lead before the break from a short corner.

The Stags improved after the interval and were much more fluid in their play. But further short corners kept up the pressure from Teddington before Webster stepped up to slot home his 23rd goal of the season from a short corner.

The Stags pushed on for a winner but, with 12 minutes to go, the Teddington short corner routine prevailed for a third time and Herts were staring at a second consecutive defeat.

But the visitors were undeterred and got their reward when Max Webster got the crucial touch in a goalmouth scrap to make it 3-3.

There was controversy in the dying minutes as Herts broke away for a fourth but a poor challenge by a Teddington player went unseen by the umpires.

With their hopes of promotion almost certainly gone, West Herts ladies took out their frustrations on Harleston Magpies, winning 3-0.

The Stags took the lead when Louise Smith rounded off a good team move after 15 minutes.

They continued to press after grabbing the opener and another flowing team move resulted in a goal when Judith Duffin added the final touch for 2-0.

In the second half Herts might have added a number of further goals but racked up a string of near misses instead. Their third goal arrived when Becky Perry converted a short corner, her 18th of the campaign.

The men’s Seconds lost out in an eight-goal thriller against Witham, going down 5-3 in Division Two South West.

There was disappointment for the men’s Thirds too, who surrendered top spot in Division Three South West after losing 4-1 at home to Berkhamsted.

But it was a more successful afternoon for the Fourths, who eased to a 2-0 win at Welwyn Garden City in Division Five South West.

It is six consecutive defeats for the Fifths, who were crushed 5-1 at home to Berkhamsted Thirds in Division Six South West.

And the Sixths were also soundly beaten, going down 6-1 in Division Seven South West at Shefford & Sandy Fourths.

The Sevenths played out a 2-2 draw at Hertford Fourths in Division Nine South West.

In the ladies’ section, the Seconds were 2-1 winners at Bishop’s Stortford Seconds in the Five Counties Premier.

The Thirds trounced Bishop’s Stortford Thirds 5-0 in Five Counties Division One, whilst the Fourths beat Potters Bar Seconds 2-0 in Division Two.

And the Fifths completed a good weekend’s work with a 2-1 win in Division Five at Broxbourne Thirds.
