Fullerians were crowned London Three North West champions on Saturday after thrashing Hitchin 51-5 and chairman Kevin Brind believes head coach Rich Hoskins has given the club direction.

After swatting aside Hitchin to secure their first promotion since 2009, Fullers will now compete in London Two North West from next season, the seventh tier of rugby in the UK.

It was a comprehensive performance and victory for Fullers, who set the tone early on when wing Tom Williams touched down following a well-worked move to open the scoring.

Ben Meyers, Luke Jacobs, Connor Head (2), Liam Boyd and Williams again all went over as Fullers cruised to the all-important victory.

Head coach Hoskins only joined Fullers in the summer and Brind was quick to pay tribute to the former London Irish and Bath tight-head prop.

He said: “I think he has brought a direction for the club and the guys have bought into that.

“We had good players before Rich arrived but he has gelled them all together and given us a direction, whereas previously we have been going around in circles. He is an old fashioned rugby chap.”

Reflecting on the club’s success, Hoskins said: “It was probably one of the best all-round performances of the season. Hitchin, as we expected, put on a very good fight in the first half but we weathered it. They had about ten minutes of possession and really gave us something to worry about at the end of the first half but it was a great performance and I am incredibly proud of all the players.

“It has been 35 or 40 players wanting to work hard, listen and learn, who have come out and won the league with not many different players.

“They have brought into what myself, Kev Brind and the coaching staff wanted to do and how we wanted to play from day one.”

And rather than drinking in the achievement, Hoskins has already begun plotting Fullers’ assault on London Two North West for next season.

He explained: “The plans are already afoot. I had a meeting with a new backs coach who is coming on board and we were there talking things over for about five hours the other day.

“I have an operation in May and I will be off my feet for a few weeks so I need to get as much planning done as I can now.

“I think we have kept all our players from this season and picked up a few more for next season that are coming back to the club.”

Although Hoskins has coached at the second tier before with Camberley, he has no experience of the North West league but has refused to let venturing into the unknown restrict his ambition for Fullers.

“We want to try and cement ourselves at this level,” he said. “It is just a really big achievement considering where they finished last season (eighth). We will take it game by game again. There are no expectations other than to stay up.

“We want to organise three quite tough games in pre-season and we have already agreed to play Harrow, who won the league above so it will be a good marker for us. We beat them in pre-season last year and they went on to win the league.”

And chairman Brind believes Fullers could surpass Hoskins’ hopes for next season.

“I reckon we will compete again,” he said. “We have got a good set of forwards and if you have that you are well on your way. I reckon we will be there or thereabouts. When we have cemented our place I want to push on again – I would love to finish in the top four.”
