Paul Hobbs has set his sights on making sure Sun Sports do not become comfortable in the middle of the Premier Division and instead look to follow in the footsteps of champions Kings Langley.

Both sides were promoted from Division One last season and although Sun set the early pace, it was Kings who were ultimately crowned champions in their first season at this level.

And after taking a higher level by storm to finish fifth, Hobbs is adamant Sun must challenge again next season instead of becoming complacent.

He said: “I do not think it is a fluke we have both done so well. Both teams had that adrenalin from winning promotion last season and built momentum off the back of that.

“I think there are a lot of teams in the Premier Division who are comfortable in the middle of the pack; not going up, not going down. I don’t want us to be like that. I am not saying we will get promoted but I will give my utmost to make sure we are challenging again.”

Sun signed off with a 1-0 defeat at home to Biggleswade United on Saturday but secured fifth place despite failing to win any of their final four fixtures. However, Hobbs was full of pride after watching his side take to a higher level with minimal fuss.

He said: “The boys have given more than enough this season. I said to them we were disappointed [with the loss] but over the bigger picture of 42 games they have been excellent. The boys just turn up and play and nine times out of ten it costs them money with work.

“I would have taken fifth if you offered me it before a ball was even kicked.”

Having topped the table at Christmas, Sun fell away in the new year, with the Kings Langley juggernaut eventually romping home by a margin of ten points, having scored 127 goals and collected 103 points.

But Hobbs knows where Sun went wrong and is already seeking to make sure the same mistake is avoided next season.

He explained: “I said at Christmas not to get carried away and see what happened. But then we lost Jimmy Armstrong and Simeon Fearon to injury and that affected the boys. We just couldn’t replace 30 or 40 goals – the lack of depth in the squad cost us, if I am honest.”

Berkhamsted signed off in style ahead of their Premier Division Cup final by crushing Cockfosters 5-0 on Tuesday evening.

Mick Vipond’s side finish the season in sixth and will head into their cup final against Colney Heath on Bank Holiday Monday full of confidence.

Jay Caines, who had netted on his first-team debut a week earlier, stole the show for Berko by scoring his first senior hat-trick.

The young forward grabbed the opener when he darted between the two Cockfosters centre-backs and lobbed over the onrushing goalkeeper.

Frankie Jowle repeated the trick soon after to double the lead; goalkeeper Carl Tasker providing the assist with a big clearance.

Caines pounced for his second shortly before half time to give the Comrades a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

When BJ Christie was fouled in the penalty area after the break he allowed Caines to complete his hat-trick from the spot.

And Christie’s gesture was rewarded when he rattled home number 37 for the season with a back-post header. It was his 29th league goal but Christie still missed out on the Golden Boot to Oxhey Jets’ Lee Armitt (35).

Tring Athletic ended the season on a high, cruising past Holmer Green 3-0 to secure ninth place.

Visitors Tring took the lead after 14 minutes when a long clearance forward from Adam Toone was nodded past his own goalkeeper by Ben Bradley.

And six minutes later it was 2-0 as Ryan Sturges slipped the ball inside for Ollie Hogg to manufacture enough space to curl into the bottom corner.

In the 81st minute Kieron Turner completed a remarkable season personally, firing home from close range following good work from Greg Deer to register his 21st of the campaign from midfield.

Athletic face Hemel Hempstead Town in the final of the St Mary’s Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday.

Dene Gardner brought the curtain down on his spell as Leverstock Green boss by securing a 2-0 home win over London Tigers.

Louis Bircham opened the scoring in the 80th minute before Luke Warner-Ely doubled up nine minutes into stoppage time.

Levy end the season in 15th position.
