West Herts will take on Langleybury A in the quarter-finals of the Watford Observer Fourteen14 Shield after they progressed through the first two second round ties to be played.

The Stags got the better of Bushey by five wickets on Friday of last week, while Langleybury’s first team beat Watford Grammar School for Boys by 15 runs on Tuesday to set up a last-eight date at West Herts’ Park Avenue home.

Michael Foley led the way with 40 at number three as Bushey reached 130 for nine off their 14, eight-ball overs after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Opener Narenda Gogna made 22 and Chandan Sharma scored one more run at the bottom of the order as West Herts shared the wickets around, with Raoul Harding (two for 16), Craig Sanders (two for 19) and Ryan Magee (two for 26) all taking two apiece.

In reply, openers Vinesh Gorasia (21) and Matthew Smith (22) got the Stags off to a solid start. Captain Sanders then top-scored with 37 before Nandana De Silva (12 not out) and Harding (12 not out) saw their side over the finish line with six balls to spare.

Langleybury A now await after their tie with Watford Grammar featured two notable batting displays and an impressive spell with the ball.

After choosing to bat, Bury were in early trouble after two Tom Brall wickets had reduced them to 13 for two after two overs.

Nahim Amin then joined David Best and they took the score to 134 in the 11th over, before Amin was caught going for another big six for 72.

Langleybury only scored 12 runs in the last three overs, due mainly to Matt Grinham getting five for three in two overs, including four wickets in four balls, with a maiden off the last eight deliveries.

Chasing 146 for eight, Watford Grammar School were always behind the run rate, as Ollie Illot bowled well for his one for 27 off four overs.

The school’s skipper, Luke Samarasinghe, who plays his club cricket at Hunton Bridge, batted throughout the innings to finish on 64 not out but it wasn’t enough to see his side to victory.

Bushey and Watford Grammar now face a wait to see if they have qualified for the Plate.

The other six second round ties are due to be played by Friday, May 29.

Revised quarter-final draw (to be played by Friday, June 12 - seeds in bold): Radlett or Met Police Bushey v Frogmore or Leverstock Green B; West Herts v Langleybury A; Abbots Langley or Leverstock Green A v Kings Langley or Chipperfield Clarendon; Watford Town A or Watford Haidery B v Langleybury B or Watford Haidery A.
