Kyle Langford will take on two of the world’s top-ten rated 800m runners this year as he bids to continue his excellent season by reaching the semi-finals of his first major global senior event this weekend.

The 19-year-old Garston runner booked his place at the World Championships in Beijing after clocking a time of 1.45.78 at the Anniversary Games at the Olympic Stadium last month.

Langford won the British senior title and European Junior crown this summer and is the third fastest British junior in history over two laps of the track.

The Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier has been drawn in heat two of the 800m, which is due to get underway at 4.58am UK time on Saturday, and will take to the starting line as the sixth quickest of the eight athletes scheduled to compete on season’s best times.

However, championship races are not often about fast times and Langford has already proved his tactical qualities during his breakthrough season at senior level.

Langford has been drawn in lane six, directly inside France’s 2012 European Championship bronze medallist Pierre-Ambroise Bosse, who is the second quickest in the heat this season with a time of 1.43.88 and ranked eighth in the global rankings. The fastest athlete in the field in 2015 is Ethiopia’s Mohammed Aman (1.43.56), who is due to line up in lane four and is ranked fifth in the world.

The first three in each of the six heats, plus the six fastest losers, will qualify for Sunday’s semi-finals (1.15pm UK time), with the final taking place on Tuesday at 1.55pm UK time.
