Watford middleweight Elliott Matthews says he wants something to show for his career when he retires, admitting he looks forward to the day when he can stop.

The Southern Area champion will be matched over eight rounds at the Camden Centre on Friday, October 2.

The show will be screened live on London Live and should Matthews win, he’s pencilled in to box again by the end of the year.

He then hopes to be challenging for more belts in 2016.

“I’ve served my apprenticeship and now I’m ready to break through,” said the 34-year-old.

“I want to get people talking about me and get matched up with some of the top boys in the division.”

He continued: “It’s not for everyone. I wouldn’t recommend a boxer’s life.

“It’s in me, it’s what I do, but I still look forward to the day when I can hang my gloves up.

“I want something more to show for all the hard work I’ve put in before I retire.

“I want to put on some great performances and win the British title.

“You have to believe in yourself in this game.”

But the fight Matthews really wants is with British champion Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell.

He said: “Blackwell has some guts. He’s fought hard to achieve what he has and you have to respect him for that, but I still feel there have been better British champions and I would beat him.”
