Fourteen-year-old fencer Jasmine Porter has underlined her undoubted potential by earning selection for the Great Britain Under-17 foil fencing squad.

The Three Rivers Young Blades member has represented England at Under-15 level but produced impressive displays at competitions in Newcastle and in Hendon, which moved her into the top ten national rankings for the Under-17 age group.

That form proved enough for the British selectors to name Porter, who is coached by former British senior champion Dominque Szokolovics, in the Great Britain squad, which will travel to the next European Under-17 event in Bratislava, Slovakia, next month.

Porter is the first fencer from the club, based at Royal Masonic School for Girls in Rickmansworth, to represent Great Britain at youth level since Szokolovics. She had a successful run at youth, junior and senior level before eventually reaching the world top ten.

Porter’s coaching team will now work with her to prepare her for the event in Bratislava, which will feature the best of youth fencers from all over Europe and rest of the world.

It has been a great honour to represent England at Under-15 level for the last two years,” Porter said She said: “ButI am really pleased I have been able to move up a level and have been invited to represent my country at such a prestigious event."

“I could not have done this without the excellent coaching I have received at Three Rivers Young Blades under the leadership of the professor of fencing Liam Harrington and, especially from my coach, Dominque Szokolovics.

“She has been a great role model for me and has always provided encouragement when things have not been going so well.”
