Matt Wallace’s chances of being in the mix to try and win a European Tour card are rapidly fading despite shooting his best round to date at final qualifying in Spain.

Following rounds of 71 and 76 in the opening two rounds at the PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona, the Moor Park golfer fired a level-par 72 today to remain on five-over par at the halfway stage of the six-round event.

But with only the top 70 players and ties making it through for the final two rounds, the odds are firmly against the 25-year-old making the cut as he is currently seven shots adrift of that point.

Final qualifying is held over two courses and having played the par-70 Tour Course on Saturday, Wallace returned to the scene of yesterday’s disappointing 76, the par-72 Stadium Course, for today's round.

The Pinner resident found himself four-over for his first nine holes yesterday but today reached the turn one-under for his round after a birdie on the third. He was to let that shot slip with a bogey on the 11th, regain it with a birdie for the second successive day on the 12th, only to lose it again on the next hole before completing the remainder of his round in par.

If Wallace can defy the odds and make the cut, he will then need to bridge the gap to the top 25 and ties in the final two rounds to achieve a place alongside on the European Tour.

Wallace, who finished 11th on the Alps Tour this season, secured his place at final qualifying after finishing in a tie for sixth place in the second qualifying competition.

The event is currently being led by Swedish amateur Marcus Kinhult and Poland’s Lukas Nemecz, both of whom are 14-under par.
