Six points are all that separate sixth-placed Kings Langley and leaders AFC Rushden & Diamonds in Southern League Division One Central and it's for that reason joint-manager Paul Hughes is paying no attention to the table yet.

Kings are two points outside of the play-off places after Saturday's 3-1 win over Bedford Town at Gaywood Park.

With 16 fixtures remaining Hughes is refusing to get caught up in obsessing over jostling for positions at this stage.

He said: "I think it's common sense [not to worry about the table at this stage]. One team wins and one team loses and that little pack of teams shuffles again.

"You have got an idea of eight or nine team who want to push on but that’s it.

"The attitude for us is very much just to keep winning games and not worry about what is going on around us because that's all we can do and it will eventually open up."

Kings were irresistible on Saturday, taking the game to mid-table Bedford from the outset. They went close to opening the scoring through Mitchell Weiss, Dean Hitchcock and David Hutton before taking the lead in the 18th minute.

Connor Toomey got the opener for Kings, heading in Hitchcock's corner to give the hosts a deserved lead. Three minutes later Weiss pounced on a poor clearance from Josh Beech to drill in the second.

It was no coincidence Kings were on top from the start according to Hughes: "It was definitely the plan to go for the throat from the outset.

"The mid-table teams are all good teams so we didn't want to give them any confidence and we went with three up front."

Christian Lester pulled one back for the visitors within a minute of the restart but Hughes felt his side were always in control despite seeing their lead halved.

"All it did was give them a lift – they didn't look like scoring [another]," said Hughes. "When you're playing a team with confidence they work a bit harder and things go their way a bit more but we had control of the game."

Hughes was particularly pleased to see Toomey on the scoresheet after a spell out with injury earlier in the season.

"He really sums up our team spirit up," enthused Hughes. "He's high energy, hardworking and has got quality.

"He's the type of player you look to for inspiration as well and it's great to have him back in the team."

Kings go to winless-in-five Arlesey Town on Saturday but are all too aware of the pitfalls of taking such opposition lightly.

"We had the same problem last time because they hadn't won a game for six or seven matches and then they came and beat us," explained Hughes.

"I've no idea how they're playing but for us it's another tough game away from home."
