Teenager Ollie Taverner won his first international medal and secured a qualifying time for the Olympic trials in Geneva last weekend.

The 14-year-old, who moved from Queens' School in 2014 to a scholarship at Mount Kelly Swimming School in Devon, continued his rapid progress in the sport at the Geneva International Meet.

The Watford Swimming Club member set a new British record in his age group with the fastest 50m breaststroke. He finished seventh overall in a time of 30.28.

Taverner celebrated winning a bronze medal in the Under-18 100m breaststroke final. The swimmer was seeded first going into the final and finished third with a time of 1.06.98.

This earned him a qualifying time for the Olympic trials.

His mother Lisa said: "It is his first international medal and to get the British record as well was really quite special.

"It will be a great experience for him. For a 14-year-old to achieve something like this is amazing."

The swimmer also earned personal bests in the 200m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle races in Switzerland.

Taverner, who started competitive swimming at the age of seven, will compete against the likes of Adam Peaty in April's Olympic trials which will be held in Glasgow.

He is also part of the England Performance Programme and is waiting to hear if he makes it into stage three. If picked Taverner will compete abroad for Great Britain in May.
