Callum Shinkwin has made an encouraging start to the Lyoness Open but Moor Park club-mate Matt Wallace is set to have more work to do if he is to make the weekend in his second European Tour event in Austria.

Bushey-based Shinkwin is in a tie for 16th place after the first round at Atzenbrugg after firing a two-under-par round of 70.

Birdies at the par four third, par three sixth and par fourth 13th had put the 23-year-old at three-under-par with five to play, but he then dropped shots at the par three 14th and par five 15th to lose some ground. However, he immediately recovered one of those with a birdie on the par five 16th to lie six shots behind first round leader, Spain’s Adrian Otaegui.

Fresh from competing in his first Tour event at the Nordea Masters, Wallace started promisingly with a birdie at the third but a dropped shot on the par four fifth started a run of four bogeys in five holes as the 26-year-old went out in a three-over 39.

The Pinner professional regrouped with three straight pars before going birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey through 13 to 16 to lie in a share of 88th spot overnight after shooting a 75.

While Shinkwin is playing his first season on the European Tour, Wallace received an invitation to last week’s event in Sweden after his history-making run of four straight Alps Tour victories.

Both players made encouraging starts at the Nordea Masters and made the cut but faded, with Shinkwin ending the tournament on five-over-par while his club-mate was one shot further back.
