Charlene Thomas has decided to stage a bid to run inside the UK Athletics Olympic Games qualifying standard for the 1500m at a specially arranged programme of elite races at Watford on Wednesday.

The British Milers’ Club have been given a one-hour slot during the Watford Open meeting at Woodside and have arranged a series of races over 800m, 1500m and 5000m to give British runners the chance to achieve the Rio standards.

Thomas ran a season’s best of 4.10.27 to win the Grand Prix race at Watford last month and returns with the target of running inside the UKA Olympic A standard of 4.07.00.

“I’ve entered the 1500m at the British Milers’ Club meet on 15th June with the aim to run an OG QT. Anyone else up for it?” said Thomas on her twitter account.

Her appeal has struck a chord with entries also received from Hannah England, who has run 4.09.98 outdoors this year, Jess Judd (4.12.45), Faye Fullerton and the 25-year-old German twins Diana Sujew and Elina Sujew, who boast lifetime bests of 4.05.62 and 4.07.36 respectively.

Likewise the men’s 1500m is also shaping up to be a super fast race with Jake Wightman and Ross Murray heading a strong field with their sights set on the Olympic standard of 3.36.20.

Wightman ran a season’s best of 3.37.53 at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Birmingham and the 21-year-old will be looking to push on from that on a track where he has enjoyed great success in the past.

Murray has yet to race on the track this summer but on his last appearance at Watford in 2015 he won the Grand Prix race in 3.37.76 and has a lifetime best of 3.34.76 which he ran in 2012 when he qualified for the London Games.

Also currently in the field are World Championships 5000m runner Tom Farrell and Dale King-Clutterbuck.

The women’s 800m sees a rejuvenated Step Twell, who is currently top of the UK Rankings for 5000m, on the start line as she opts for some speed work and she will be joined by in-form Melissa Courtney, who ran a lifetime best of 4.07.55 at Birmingham earlier this month to go third in the UK Rankings.

Emily Dudgeon, Katie Snowden, Revee Walcott-Nolan, Katie Kirk and Leah Barrow are also entered.

There is a men’s only 5000m with a strong junior entry, headed by current 3000m leader Alex Yee plus Gus Cockle, as they chase the qualifying time of 13.55.00.

The men’s 800m also looks highly competitive with Jamie Webb, who is the current UK number one after smashing his personal best with 1.46.59 in Belgium last month, leading the way and joined by James Bowness and Zak Curran.

“It looks like it is going to be a terrific meeting and the decision to put it on has been vindicated by the quality of the athletes wanting to run,” said British Milers' chairman Tim Brennan.

The meeting is due to start at 6.45pm at the Watford track and admission is free.
