More than 800 players from 93 teams helped ensure Watford Ladies’ annual six-a-side tournament was another big success on Sunday.

Established as a firm favourite of the end-of-season football calendar, the event brings together girls’ and women’s teams from across the South East, celebrating the continuing development of the female game and raising important funds for the club’s youth sides.

Club chairman Chris Crickitt said “We are very proud that the Watford Ladies tournament remains one of the biggest and most successful all-female tournaments in the country.

“It is appreciated and admired by the many hundreds of people who turn up and truly enjoy the day but this is only made possible by the dedicated group of volunteers who help organise and run all aspects of this exciting event.

“I would also like to say a big thank you to Fullerians RFC for allowing us to hold our tournament at such a splendid venue, and all the referees, coaches, parents, players, sponsors and friends who contributed to such a special day.”

For the Golden Girls, there were some ‘home’ victories to celebrate as three Watford Ladies Youth teams enjoyed cup success in their respective age categories in the event at Fullerians RFC.

The Youth Development Squad played some impressive football on their way to the final and they lifted the Premier Cup in the open age section following a 1-0 win over Wealdstone Blue.

In the Under-16 section, the Hornets Yellow team beat Garston Purple 1-0 in their final and the Under-14 Hornets Yellows also won their age group trophy with a 1-0 success over Garston Pumas. The Under-12 Hornets Reds were age group runners-up, narrowly losing 1-0 to Stevenage Borough in the final.

Elsewhere, Wealdstone Red took the open age Community Cup with a 1-0 win over Potters Bar while Denham United struck two goals without reply in the Under-15 final against AFC Leyton.

Harvesters Under-13 edged out Garston 1-0 in their final whilst it was an all-AFC Leyton affair in the Under-11 final as the Blue team took the trophy with a 2-1 win over the Red team in a highly entertaining derby.

There was another derby contest in the Under-10s group as Garston Jaguars beat Garston Wildcats 2-0 and Berkhamsted Raiders topped the mini league in the Under-9s section.
