Talented sporting youngsters and the officials of the future were recognised last night when the Three Rivers and Watford School Sports Partnership held their annual awards ceremony in Rickmansworth.

Dozens of youngsters from the partnership’s 47 schools, their relatives, friends and teachers were at Watersmeet Theatre for the presentations across 11 categories which recognised individual and team achievements, as well as pupils who had demonstrated leadership and commitment to inspire others to get involved in sport.

The awards were handed out by Britain’s most successful ever gymnast, Beth Tweddle, who spoke with humour and modesty about her journey through three Olympic Games which culminated in fulfilling her ambition of winning a medal at London 2012 when she claimed bronze on the uneven bars.

A multiple European and World champion, the 31-year-old urged the younger members of the audience to “not let anyone take your dream away”, stressing what can be achieved through hard work and commitment.

Among the winners were Rickmansworth School’s talented footballer, Shannon Cooke, who was named the Key Stage 3 to 5 Exceptional Performer of the Year after winning several caps for England.

Marli Jessop and Freddie Symonds, from St Joan of Arc and Little Green schools respectively, won the two Outstanding Achievement honours, while Bobbi Francis was recognised as the Outstanding Leader of the Year.

Parmiter’s School’s national championship-winning gymnasts were recognised as the Key Stage 3 to 5 Team of the Year, with Orchard Primary’s footballers picked up the award for the younger age group.
