Callum Shinkwin has qualified for The Open Championship after achieving his highest European Tour finish to date at the French Open.

The Moor Park golfer shot a three-under-par final round of 68 to come in a share of ninth spot at Le Golf National and secured his place at Royal Troon as one of the leading four players who finished inside the top 12 and ties and were not already exempt.

After rounds of 71, 72 and 71 had left him on one-over-par, the Bushey-based professional climbed 13 places on the leaderboard on the final day.

As he had done in his previous three rounds, Shinkwin birdied the par five third and picked up another shot on the par five ninth to move into minus figures for the week.

A third birdie of the round followed at the par three 11th before he bogeyed the par four 12th, but he recovered that shot with another birdie at the par three 16th.

The 23-year-old then had to wait for the rest of the field to finish their tournament before his place at his first major was confirmed alongside fellow qualifiers Brandon Stone, Alex Noren and Richard Sterne.

Shinkwin netted €74,200 as a result of his first top-ten finish to take his season earnings to €213,847 and move up to 81st place in the Race To Dubai standings.

The Bushey player’s achievements complete a great weekend for Moor Park after Matt Wallace won his fifth consecutive Alps Tour event.

The Open starts on Thursday, July 14.
