Golf coach Harriet Key is aiming to get more ladies and juniors involved in the sport.

The 27-year-old, who is based at Rickmansworth’s Moor Park Golf Course, started playing golf at the age of 12 but knew her path in the sport was to teach rather than to play.

The coach, from Barnet, said she was never quite cut out to be away from home for a long time.

She said: “I was more interested in doing things for other people and giving back and I was getting more pleasure in people that I have taught are getting success from it.

“There is nothing better than that.”

She coaches for First Degree Golf Academy, which has four members of staff, the two directors Rob Darwin and Robert Warburton along with Matt Jones and Key herself.

Key said they all have their own role responsibilities but she enjoys what she can bring from her side of the operation.

“At the moment I am not sure on exact numbers but I have about 30 of the lady members that I see regularly,” she explained.

“But I think the main thing is trying to bring new lady golfers in as well, I really like that side of things, to keep them filtering in into the club.

“So we have quite a good pathway now set up with the beginners’ scheme and a route into club membership.

“That is where I see my biggest role and what I want to try and do over the next couple of years.”

The PGA professional also trains juniors so more and more young people can get involved with the sport.

Key believes in breaking down those stereotypical barriers that people portray the sport as.

She said: “The school stuff is brilliant as we are hitting a large number of children who have maybe never had the opportunity to get into the sport or know any of the stuff we do here.

“So it just creating links like that has been a huge benefit and for the juniors who have started to get involved."

She continued: “The good thing about them is the social aspect of the programmes, so we have a lot of people who come and they bring two or three friends with them.

“And then they enjoy it and they will bring another two or three friends; that is the biggest thing.

“And if they get people that they are coming with thenm, they don’t feel as exposed to people thinking they are a beginner or they are a lady at a golf club.”

First Degree, with Moor Park Golf Club, will hold their second Golf Academy Open Weekend on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17.

It is free for all those who wish to attend and the two days will consist of free golf group lessons for adults and children between seven and 17 and a limited number of free individual lessons.
