Moor Park golfer Callum Shinkwin was knocked out of the Paul Lawrie Match Play after a dramatic first round defeat this afternoon.

Shinkwin trailed for most of the contest at Archerfield but two late birdies sent the tie to extra holes. But the Spaniard snatched victory by claiming the 19th hole.

De La Riva grabbed the lead after the fourth hole when Shinkwin could only manage a bogey four.

A birdie on the next hole from De La Riva extended his advantage but Shinkwin struck back immediately with a birdie on the par five sixth hole.

The topsy-turvy nature of the clash continued on the seventh hole when another bogey from Shinkwin left him two down to his opponent.

But a birdie three on the ninth hole ensured he went into the back nine only trailing by one.

Another error on the tenth hole proved costly as De La Riva restored his lead to two.

But the Spaniard conceded the next one to leave the tie in the balance.

The 12th hole was shared but another bogey from Shinkwin on the 13th hole left the Bushey-based golfer with an uphill battle to stay in the knockout tournament.

Shinkwin won both the 14th and 18th hole but it proved in vain after De La Riva edged into the next round.
