Matt Wallace’s wonderful winning run on the Alps Tour has come to an end after he came within one shot of being in the frame for a potential sixth successive triumph.

The Moor Park Golf Club professional started yesterday’s final round of the Citadelle Trophy International-Golf de Preisch in a tie for ninth place and five shots behind joint leaders Federico Maccario and Niccolo Quintarelli, who were on 10-under-par.

However, the 26-year-old, who had made history by winning his previous five tournaments on the tour, went close to overhauling the deficit by shooting a five-under-par 67 to finish level on ten-under-par with another Italian, Enrico Di Nitto.

But Wallace's equal best final round total was not quite enough to catch eventual play-off winner Maccario and Quintrelli, who were joined at the top of the leaderboard by France’s Alexandre Daydou on 11-under at the course on the France-Luxembourg border.

Such has been Wallace’s superb Alps Tour form this year, a share of fourth place represented his lowest finish in eight events, but enabled him to further strengthen his formidable lead at the summit of the Order of Merit.

The Moor Park player is now more than 17,500 points clear of France’s Victor Perez, who has played in six more events in 2016, and his efforts had already secured exemption from the first stage of European Tour Qualifying School.
