Herts Sunday Junior Cup Round Two

It was a relatively successful morning for the Watford Sunday League’s clubs in the junior County Cup with seven making it through to the third round.

The all-WSL encounter saw AFC Woodside beat Roundbush 6-2; the victors clearly having an experienced side for this level of football and they will be looking to going much further in the competition.

It was Roundbush who went ahead early in the tie with Martin Clancy scoring after a defensive error by the home side, but Woodside were soon level when Joe Dettmer set up the chance for Drew Snailham to equalise.

Snailham then turned provider, setting up Lewis Edwards to put his side ahead before the same combination doubled the lead, with a fourth soon following from Joe Dettmer. However, their opponents got themselves back into the game before the break when an own goal from Nathan Gullin reduced the arrears.

The second half was a much scrappier affair, but it was Roundbush who spurned a golden chance when they missed a penalty before being reduced to ten men for a second bookable offence.

The last two Woodside goals came in the final five minutes; Snailham from the penalty spot to complete his hat-trick before Gullin scored to make sure he netted at both ends.

The other high scorers were Hertsmere, who defeated Hatfield Seniors 5-1 as Mitch Knight, Carl Davis, Nathan Slinger, James Skipsey and an own goal ensured safe passage.

AC Little Silhouette of Milan edged past Edmonton Blades 3-2 thanks to a double from Sam Haslam and one from David Donnelly.

A returning Danny Roberts was on target in each half to send AFC Green Machine to a 2-0 victory over Letchworth Albion, while The Compasses won by the same score line against Tom Tiddlers Tavern through Stuart Henderson and Ben Denyer.

The other team to win at home were The Tree, who beat Greenacres II Reserves 3-1; Andy Pryor with a brace and Rob Mair the men on target.

Inter were the only side to win away from home as they edged past The Midland 2-1 thanks to Chris Stead and Alex Heyward.

There was heartache for both Ripstone and Hertfordshire Lions as they suffered penalty shoot-out defeats after high-scoring draws after extra-time.

Ripstone shared an incredible 14 goals with St Albans Irish Club; Ollie Brill scoring four times, with Dan Churchman and Purav Patel also among their men on target before they went out in a sudden death shoot-out 6-5.

It was a similar story for Lions at Landrovers, the visitors having the lead three separate times only to twice be pegged back just seconds away from victory, both at the end of normal time and extra-time.

Greg Spingal, Louis McNamara and Sam Crafts got the goals in the 3-3 draw, but it was Spingal who missed the vital penalty in the shoot-out.

Woodlands United lost by the odd goal in five to New Green - Bezmia Rrema and Michael Hooker netting - and Bushey Rangers suffered a single goal defeat to Victoria United.

The only side to suffer a heavy defeat were Green Dragon Reserves as they lost 6-1 to Cheshunt Cobras, Alfie Palmer with the consolation effort.

President’s Cup Round One

The cup competition for Premier and Division One sides got underway yesterday and the all-first division clash between Croxley Community Centre and Colne Valley saw the visitors win through 5-2 after extra-time.

Joe Murphy put Valley ahead just before the break, but despite being reduced to ten men, the home side took the lead thanks to goals from Martin Bartlett and Andy Avis. However, Valley took the tie to an additional 30 minutes thanks to Murphy’s second of the game.

It was all one way traffic in extra-time though, as Murphy completed his hat-trick to put Valley back ahead and it was soon followed by a fourth goal from Andy Mackenzie-Bell. Murphy then scored his fourth and his team’s fifth in the second period.

There was another high-scoring affair as first Division North Watford lost 4-3 to top-flight Old Fullerians.

Langleybury Cricket Club continued their winning start to the season but only after getting past a determined performance from Compasses North by the odd goal in seven.

Harry Lock with a double, Greg Cook and Dan Chitty netted for the home side, with Sham Patel’s hat-trick proving in vain for the visitors.

Bedmond gained a first league win of the campaign with a 3-1 home triumph over Rickmansworth Athletic.

Jordan Davies scored early in the first half, Clement Asante made it 2-0 on the hour before Rickmansworth pulled a goal back from Ionut Nedelea. But it was Asanate who scored again to ensure the win near the end.
