Callum Shinkwin admitted it had been “a very tiring week” after his British Masters campaign ended with a one-over-par round of 72 to finish in a share of 58th place on a total of one-under.

The Moor Park Golf Club professional had looked set to miss out on his home-town tournament at The Grove until he was called up at very short notice as a late replacement for Thomas Bjorn.

Having made the cut by one shot and then shot his best round of the week, a 69, yesterday, the Bushey player had to contend with a suspension in play this morning due to flooded greens before he got his final round under way at 11.15am from the tenth after play was switched to a two-tee start.

He said: “It was a bonus week and a very tiring week because without preparation you do feel very drained, especially after today when I’d just warmed up. I actually went home, just chilled out and did some stuff I had to do this afternoon this morning, then came up here, warmed up and went out.”

Asked what effect the rain had, he replied: “The course was great. I said on the putting green to someone the course will hold up and then 30 minutes later we got called in and I was like ‘how has this happened?’ But because they’re rolling the greens so much, it’s not letting the water drain through.”

Following a birdie and bogey on 12 and 13 - his third and fourth holes - Shinkwin eagled 18 to move to four-under and lift his hopes of finishing higher up the leaderboard. But a sequence of three bogeys in four holes on his ‘back’ nine saw slip back down.

“It was ok,” he said off his round. “I got it going on the front nine a little bit and didn’t hole many putts, but the eagle at nine helped. Then I had a couple of three putts early on in the back nine and a couple of poor shots into the green just cost me so I finished up with one over par.”

But the eagle came about following a stunning long iron second shot into the green that landed four to five feet from the hole.

“That probably was my best of the week,” he admitted. “That was hit perfect. I couldn’t hit a better shot really.”

Shinkwin is competing in the Portugal Masters next week. He then aims to have a week off before heading to the Turkish Airlines Open and then he hopes to play in the Nebank Golf Challenge in South Africa. “Then we’ll see where we are and hopefully the Race to Dubai” at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

Following today’s result, Shinkwin dropped three places to 77th in the Race to Dubai standings.
