Matt Wallace has underlined his status as the dominant force of the 2016 Alps Tour by winning the Grand Final in Italy to claim his sixth title in just nine appearances on the European statellite tour this season.

The Moor Park Golf Club professional saw his two-shot overnight lead halved but a three-under-par final round of 68 was good enough to beat France’s Richard Jouven by one shot and claim the top prize at Migliancio Golf and Country Club on a tournament total of 17-under-par.

The 26-year-old’s victory means he has finished top of the Tour’s Order of Merit with 49,703.17 points, almost 25,000 more than his nearest rival, and has qualified to play on the Challenge Tour in 2017. But the Pinner-based professional is setting his sights higher and will aim to round off an impressive year by securing a European Tour card.

Having set out his stall with a course record-equalling 63 and rounds of 70 and 66, Wallace was at one stage pegged back into a four-way tie for the lead during his front nine holes which he played in par golf until he reached the par five ninth and delivered an eagle.

Another five pars followed until the 15th which be birdied in two to pick up the shot which ultimately proved to be enough.

Wallace's Alps Tour form was encouraging from the start of the year when he finished in a tie for third and second place in his first two events. But his opening victory of 2016 at the Dreamland Pyramids Open was to kick start a never-before-achieved run of four consecutive tournament wins on the Tour.

That run was extended to five when the Moor Park professional, having secured invites to two European Tour events, returned to the Alps Tour at the end of June for the Open Frassanelle.

Wallace's consistency of not finishing lower than a tie for fourth in the nine Tour events he's played helped attract the attention of Chubby Chandler, who signed him to International Sports Management last weekend.
