Matt Wallace’s quest to move a step closer to securing a European Tour card has got off to a good start in Spain.

The Moor Park Golf Club professional fired an open round of 67 to leave him two shots off the lead after the opening round of the Tour’s second qualifying stage event at Lumine Golf and Beach Club in Tarragona.

The Pinner-based player, who is already guaranteed a place on the Challenge Tour next year after a stunning Alps Tour season that yielded six titles, was in excellent shape after the 11th having made five birdies to move to five-under-par.

Had it not been for a double bogey six at the 13th, Wallace would have been in a share of the first round lead this evening, but that setback was soon behind him as he picked up a sixth birdie of the day at 16 to finish on four-under-par.

The 26-year-old lies in a nine-way tie for eighth at the end of the opening day and with a top-20 finish normally good enough, he is on track to secure a place at final qualifying at the PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona later this month.
