Callum Shinkwin was unable to climb the leaderboard today after a disappointing third round at the Turkish Airlines Open.

The Bushey-based professional began his round off the pace on one-over-par but knowing that a good score would boost his chances of improving his current Race to Dubai ranking of 73rd at the lucrative $7 million European Tour Final Series tournament at Antalya.

A birdie at his first hole, the 11th, got the Moor Park Golf Club player back to even par for the tournament, but a bogey at 16, a double bogey at 18 and another bogey at the fourth saw him drop back to four-over.

Shinkwin retrieved one of those shots at the eighth, but his round was to end with a double bogey on nine and a bogey at the tenth to leave him on six-over-par and in a three-way tie for 71st place in the 78-strong limited field event.

That number of players will be reduced by six at next week's Nedbank Golf Challenge, but Shinkwin is the right side of the entry line at the Gary Player-hosted event which also carries a total prize fund of $7 million.

Following tomorrow's final round in Antalya, the 23-year-old will know what he needs to do in Sun City to make the top 60 in the Race to Dubai and secure a place at the season-ending World Tour Championship.

Shinkwin needed to bridge a gap of 87,624 points before the Turkish Open got under way, but such is the level of prize money on offer this week and in South Africa it is not an unsurmountable prospect if he can achieve a good result.

Having led by six shots overnight following a course record 62, Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen cemented his dominance in Turkey and extended his lead to seven with a third round 68 to move to 18-under-par.
