Circumstances threatened to derail Tring Athletic’s bid to reach the third round of the FA Vase, but they overcame a number of obstacles to beat Rothwell Corinthians 2-1 on Wednesday night.

It looked like a case of bad things happening in threes for Athletic, who had to overcome traffic jams, a delayed kick-off and playing for 50 minutes with 10 men in the rearranged clash.

The visitors got off to the ideal start as Chris Stapleton headed in a George Brinkman corner after four minutes.

But following the delays, the bad luck kept coming as Athletic saw George Carbery sent off just before half-time.

However, Tring dug their heels in and kept applying the pressure.

And their efforts were rewarded when Stapleton was brought down in the box on the hour mark, allowing Sam Joliffe to make it 2-0 from the spot.

Lewis O’Dell pulled one back for the home side with a penalty but Tring held on for the win and have been rewarded with a third-round trip to FC Romania.

Berkhamsted also progressed to the third round, beating Hullbridge Sports 5-2 and will now travel to St Margaretsbury.

The Comrades made a great start with two goals in the first half as Ashley Lewis nodded in the opener.

Dan Jones doubled Berko’s lead three minutes before the interval when he broke free and shot underneath goalkeeper Jamie Merrells.

Adam Mead made it 3-0 early in the second with a perfectly timed free-kick which flew over the defensive wall.

Ashton Campbell netted the fourth when his shot went in under the bar before Merrells could move.

Hullbridge began a brief fight back after Dean Wallace pulled one back at the near post for his side, with their second coming five minutes later.

But some magic from Campbell made it five to complete the scoring.

Leverstock Green progressed to the quarter-finals of the South Midlands League Challenge Trophy with a 3-0 win at Winslow United on Tuesday night after Scott Dash was confirmed as their new boss following eight games in interim charge.

It took a little over four minutes for Curtis Donaldson to score after his one-match suspension.

It could have been 2-0 shortly afterwards when Donaldson ran onto a ball from Casey Linsell and crossed to the far post but Lewis Bowers hit his shot into the ground.

Just before the break Winslow won a series of corners but Mark Berg kept them at bay.

Two early goals in the second half put Green firmly in control of the game as David Lawrence added a second shortly after the restart.

And in the 56th minute a pass from Lawrence set up Kane Axton to shoot home the third from the edge of the penalty area. The victory came after Green saw their Vase hopes end with a 2-1 defeat to Welwyn Garden City on Saturday.
