Tring Athletic fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of league leaders London Colney on Saturday in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division.

Colney went into the match with an impressive record of having dropped only five points from 16 games and are the highest scorers in the division with 47 goals.

The game started evenly with Athletic twice going close to opening their account just before half-time.

Kieran Turner and George Carbery combined to set up Chris Stapleton, who was denied by the visiting keeper.

From the resulting corner, Jack Seaton had a free header but his effort just cleared the bar with the opening half ending 0-0.

But nine minutes after the restart Athletic failed to deal with a free-kick and former Tring player Greg Shaw got the vital touch to put Colney ahead.

The visitors showed their dominance and went 2-0 up shortly afterwards when Spencer Clarke Mardel took the opportunity to give his side a two-goal lead.

Athletic kept going and did pull a goal back deep into added time when Luke Dunstan smashed a shot past the keeper but it came too late to affect the outcome.

Athletic face Aston Clinton tomorrow in the Challenge Trophy.

Berkhamsted slumped to a 6-0 defeat to Wembley at Vale Farm, conceding three goals in each half.

The Comrades were frequently caught offside in the first half and Attika Fekete and Gustavo Mota served notice with early shots over the bar.

Jermaine Heron scored first when he was unmarked inside the penalty area and received the ball from a misplaced Berko pass.

Steve O’Reilly hit a screamer that gave Carl Tasker no chance to score the second.

And any hopes of a Berkhamsted comeback were ended just before the break when Alex Witham struck a fine third and Heron made it 4-0 with his second on the hour mark.

Matt Bateman was the main threat for the hosts and he saw one shot saved and another fly over.

At the other end, Tasker pulled off several good saves to keep the score down, as Wembley produced their best performance of the season.

However, Joe Wright hit the fifth with a close-range shot as he got to the loose ball after Tasker had pulled off a save.

Deep into injury time skipper Richard Brown ventured forward to net the final goal.

Leverstock Green had a week off from league action after their Challenge Trophy victory over Winslow United the previous week.

But the club announced at the weekend they made new appointments to the management team, with Mark Royal coming in as assistant manager to Scott Dash.

Former Colney Heath head coach Peter Weller also joined the club in the same role.
