Matt Wallace missed the cut at his third European Tour event but has vowed to “get better because of this experience”.

The Moor Park Golf Club professional had started the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship on the borderline of qualifying for the last two days at Leopard Creek Country Club after shooting an even-par 72 for his first 18 holes.

But the 26-year-old, who was competing in South Africa after receiving an invite to the European Tour event, endured a difficult second day and saw his tournament hopes end on four-over-par.

Wallace tweeted: “Disappointing end to my 2016 calendar this year. It’s been great in places and some not so, just like my scoring over the past few events.

“I’d like to thank @TeamISM for the opportunity to play @LeopardCreekCC @EuropeanTour. I’ll get better because of this experience. #2017.”

Starting from the tenth, the Pinner-based professional’s round started encouragingly with a birdie on his first hole. But it wasn’t to last.

Wallace endured a torrid ‘front’ nine as he dropped seven shots in the space of six holes, but clawed two of those back with an eagle on the par five 18th.

One of those shots was to immediately be lost at the first before the erratic nature of the Moor Park player’s round continued with three straight birdies from four to six to move him back to two-over.

Disappointingly for Wallace though, he wasn’t able to maintain a positive end to his round as he made double bogey for the second time yesterday, this time at the eighth to fall to four-over and a share of 109th place.

Although the Moor Park player did not make it through European Tour Qualifying School this year, he has secured a Challenge Tour card after a memorable Alps Tour season saw him finish top of the Order of Merit following six tournament triumphs.

These victories brought Wallace to the attention of International Sports Management and he signed for Chubby Chandler’s stable of golfing stars in October.
