Kings Langley collected a mixed bag of results as they bounced back from a crushing league defeat with victory in the Herts Senior Cup.

Tuesday night’s cup clash saw Kings produce a nine-minute second-half blitz to overcome Tring Athletic 3-0 at Gaywood Park.

Lewis Toomey had the first clear sight of goal after 17 minutes and his chipped effort had the beating of the Tring keeper but came back off the crossbar.

Tring reacted well to the scare and were close to going ahead when Chris Stapleton headed just over the bar after his initial shot had been well blocked.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the first half, but neither side could truly claim to have controlled the game heading into the break.

It was a different story after the restart as Kings began to exert a measure of dominance and create chances.

Their pressure told 11 minutes into the half when Immanuelson Duku and Toomey combined to give Ryan Plowright the chance to cross and Boris Kipeya finished.

They doubled their lead on the 58-minute mark after Duku had been hauled down by the Tring keeper and calmly converted the resulting spot-kick.

Kings completed the scoring with 25 minutes remaining, with Plowright diving in to head home a third and set up an away tie with Ware in the quarter-finals.

The victory came after Paul Hobbs’ side failed to lay a glove on Merthyr Town in the Southern League Premier Division clash as their hosts cruised to a 5-0 win on Saturday.

Kings started brightly enough against fifth-placed Town and Duku had two sights of goal inside the first five minutes.

Town soon found their rhythm though, and were ahead when Ryan Prosser arrived unmarked in the box to head an 11th-minute opener.

Matters worsened for Kings just before the half-an-hour mark after some sloppy distribution from the back gave Adam Davies the chance to cross and Kayne McLaggen tapped in.

He doubled his personal goal tally four minutes before half-time to effectively end the game as a contest.

A more committed defensive effort in the second half ensured Merthyr were restricted to fewer chances.

However, Kings solidity waned with a minute of normal time remaining and Ian Traylor made the most of a rebound to add a fourth.

Kings’ misery was completed deep into added time when some more slack marking left Ben Watkins isolated and he duly made it 5-0.

The result leaves Kings flirting with the relegation zone ahead of their league meeting with title pace-setters Leamington tomorrow.

Leamington drew 0-0 with Frome Town in their last match but still enjoy a seven point lead at the summit of the table having played twice more than their closest rivals.
