Callum Shinkwin’s second European Tour event of the season has ended at the halfway stage after he missed the cut by one shot at the Qatar Masters.

The Bushey professional followed up yesterday’s four-under-par opening round of 68 with a three-over 75 to finish the second round alongside nine other players on one-under for the tournament, which wasn’t good enough to get him through to the weekend.

Shinkwin was usefully placed in a share of 14th overnight, four shots off the lead, and he remained in contention towards the right end of the leaderboard after a mixed ‘front’ nine holes.

The Moor Park Golf Club professional started his second round on the par five tenth and immediately picked up a birdie, only to drop back to three-under following back-to-back bogeys on the par four 11th and 12th.

A three on the par four 14th moved the 23-year-old back to even par for his round and he then birdied the par 16th, bogeyed the par three 17th and birdied the par five 18th to go ‘out’ in a one-under-par 35 to leave him on five-under for the tournament.

Consecutive dropped shots on the par four fourth and fifth holes moved Shinkwin back to three-under, but he was still on track to make the last two rounds until he reached his last hole, the ninth, where a double bogey seven ultimately ended his challenge at Doha Golf Club.

Having finished in a share of 23rd at last week’s Abu Dhabi Championship, Shinwkin is entered into the Dubai Desert Classic which gets under way on Thursday.
