Callum Shinkwin’s struggles have continued after he fired a disappointing six-over-par opening round of 78 at the Maybank Championship - and he withdrew without taking a shot in the second round.

The Bushey professional had made an encouraging start to his European Tour after finishing in a tie for 23rd at the Abu Dhabi Championship, but having missed the cut at his previous two events and with his hopes of not making it three in succession all but gone, he pulled out of the Malaysian tournament.

Starting his first round from the tenth hole at Saujana Golf and Country Club, the 23-year-old moved quickly to one-under with a birdie three on his par four first hole. But that was immediately followed by the first of two double bogeys on his ‘front' nine at the par four 11th; the other coming at the par four 17th as he went ‘out’ in a three-over-par total of 39.

The Moor Park Golf Club professional’s fortunes didn’t improve on his 'back' nine either with bogeys at the par three second, par four fourth, par three fifth and par seventh to leave him on seven-over for the tournament. But Shinkwin did repair a little of the first round damage with a birdie four on the par five eighth.
