Oxhey Jets were knocked out of the Herts Charity Shield on Tuesday night, losing 6-3 to fellow Spartan South Midlands Premier Division side Berkhamsted after extra-time following a dramatic and controversial quarter-final.

The Jets had a three-goal advantage before the Comrades rallied to produce their comeback.

Luke Wells opened the scoring with a solo run and scored off the post with nine minutes on the clock.

Gary Warn and Luke Beardsworth combined to play in Lee Armitt, who calmly slotted the ball home eight minutes later to double the home side’s advantage.

And in what was a great start for Oxhey, Beardsworth added their third two minutes after their second finding the back of the net from a tight angle.

Warn had to be substituted in the first half after picking up an injury following a tackle from a Berkhamsted player.

The visitors’ fightback began when Ed Canham was pushed to the ground in the penalty area, in what Jets thought was a fair challenge, and Adam Mead put the spot kick into the corner.

Early in the second half, Berko upped their tempo and Bar Hariely appeared to catch an Ashley Lewis shot on the goal line.

The away side netted the rebound but the referee had already blown the whistle for the handball and subsequently sent off Hariely after a consultation with the visiting players. Mead duly converted the penalty to reduce the deficit to a single goal.

Following the red card, the game increasingly became one-way traffic with Berkhamsted looking to take advantage of the extra man.

With just a few minutes left to play, the Comrades made their numerical advantage count when substitute Terry Dixon laid the ball off to Mead to complete his hat-trick.

Soon into extra-time, Berkhamsted received another penalty when Lewis was brought down and Mead took his tally for the evening to four.

Alex Campana and Dixon added the fifth and sixth goals in the second half of extra-time.

Berkhamsted’s place in the semi-final had already been secured before their opponents were reduced to nine men after Beardsworth was given a red for complaining to the referee about some of the decisions made during the match.

Berkhamsted will face either London Colney or Tring Athletic in the last four.

The defeat rounded off a disappointing week for Jets after they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Hertford Town at the weekend with Sim Armstrong scoring their only goal from the penalty spot.

Berkhamsted also had a poor Saturday as they fell to a 5-1 defeat at the hands of league leaders London Colney.

The Comrades conceded two penalties early on which were converted by Colney skipper Greg Shaw.

Jon Clements made it 3-0 early on in the second 45 minutes before Canham pulled one back for the home side.

It was to be a short-lived comeback as Spencer Clarke-Mardel and Archie McClelland struck for the fourth and fifth goals.

Sun Sports got back to winning ways in the Premier Division after they defeated Leighton Town 2-1 in a mid-week league fixture as Kyle Johnson bagged a brace to take the three points.

Their match against Welwyn Garden City was called off on Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch.

It was a mixed week for Tring Athletic after they lost 3-1 to Hertford Town following their 3-1 victory over Leighton on Saturday.

Jay Lovell opened the scoring on Tuesday when he caught out Jack Hopwood before the visitors doubled their lead through Mark Summer just before half-time.

Athletic tried to find a way back into the game but Summers killed off any chance of that happening when he scored his second, and his side’s third, in the 77th minute.

Tring were awarded a penalty nine minutes from time, and Sam Joliffe dispatched his ninth spot kick of the season.

Chris Vardy, Chris Stapleton and Joliffe were on the scoresheet in Saturday’s 3-1 victory with Lorrel Smith gaining the consolation for his side.

There was another postponement for Leverstock Green after their match with Stotfold failed a mid-afternoon pitch inspection on Tuesday.

But Green had something to be thankful for after their nine men were able to hold on for an away league win over St Margaretsbury four days earlier.

Jonathan Lacey got his side off to a flyer by heading Green into a 1-0 lead with just 19 seconds on the clock.

The home side levelled in the 12th minute when Attilla Korsaveczki bundled home a loose ball from a free-kick.

Green’s start to the second half was just as impressive as the first and Lacey scored another powerful header from a Tremayne Charles free-kick.

The third goal arrived on 67 minutes when Lacey played a corner low into the six-yard box, George Biggadike flicked it on and Danilson Vicente put the ball over the line.

But two minutes later, St Margaretsbury pulled one back as Ryan Wade’s free-kick crept in the inside of the post.

With 10 minutes to go, Green were reduced to 10 men when Jack Watts slid in to clear the ball but the referee blew the whistle for a penalty.

Watts received a second yellow and Karl Thomas was also shown a straight red card after asking the referee to consult with his linesman.

Wade stepped up to take the penalty but Liam Jahn was Green’s saviour as he produced a fine save to keep the ball out of the net.

Six minutes of stoppage time were played but Leverstock held on for the vital win.
