Oxhey Jets gave a timely boost to their survival fight in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division after they gained four points from six in their last two matches.

On Tuesday night, Jets drew 0-0 against Berkhamsted at the Boundary Stadium.

The return of John Smith and Chris Blunden helped boost morale and belief in the Oxhey side.

They two combined to almost give the hosts a ninth-minute lead when Blunden deflected Smith’s shot onto the inside of the post. Berkhamsted keeper Carl Tasker and his defence watched in relief as it rolled past the opposite post to safety.

A minute later, Sim Armstrong headed against the bar from a corner, then Tasker saved excellently from the former.

Jets again went close to opening the scoring in the first 45 minutes when Blunden smacked the post once again, much to his side’s disbelief.

The second half was a more even affair as Scott Pugsley went through on goal but shot widely past the post.

Berkhamsted’s best sweeping move of the game involved Matt Bateman and Ashton Campbell. It ended with Dan Jones having a shot that Rob Partington saved.

Bateman, who was looking to score in his sixth game running, had a late snap shot saved just before full-time.

The last three meetings between these sides this season have produced a win each and now a draw.

Jets had previously got a big three points in their 3-1 away win over Broxbourne Borough on Saturday.

Oxhey’s Liam James opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he was left unmarked in the box to head home.

Borough got back into the game when the referee gave them a penalty just before half-time and this was duly converted.

Jets upped their game in the second period and in the 60th minute, Adam Lowton restored their lead when he blasted home from a Brad Thompson pass.

Blunden found the back of the net in the latter stages but it was ruled off for offside.

However, two minutes later he ensured all three points went his side’s way when he ran the ball into the net.

The Comrades completed a season double over third-placed Cockfosters courtesy of a Bateman hat-trick, his first of the season, in their 3-1 win at the weekend.

Bateman opened the scoring when his shot whistled past Austin Bayfield.

In the second half, the away side found the equaliser through new signing Ben Andreos.

But Bateman restored the lead with 20 minutes left after he placed a shot past Bayfield once again.

He then completed his hat-trick when he carefully steered a header home from a Campbell cross.

Sun Sports fell to a narrow 3-2 defeat in their mid-week fixture to Crawley Green.

Garry Wallace and Scott Bonner were on the scoresheet.

Five days earlier, the two sides had also met each other, this time in a 3-3 scoreline.

Kyle Johnson scored two with Dom David netting once. Terry Billy, Aarron Browne and Dean Dummett got the Crawley replies.

It was a mixed week for Tring Athletic, who fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Stotfold on Tuesday.

Ben L’Honore fired home from a corner as Tring remained fifth in the table.

On Saturday, Athletic got over their midweek cup final loss to Berkhamsted as they won 3-2 against Edgware Town.

Chris Vardy swept the ball home for his 18th of the season to give Tring the lead at half-time.

It took until the 74th minute for Tring to score again when Chris Stapleton took a cross in his stride and smashed the ball high into the net to net his fifth goal in three games. Jack Read then scored the third.

And a severely depleted Leverstock Green side fell to another defeat in the league when they lost 2-0 to Welwyn Garden City at Herns Lane.

Green manager Scott Dash was without a recognised keeper, so midfielder Luke Preedy took over in between the sticks.

Leverstock were caught cold by a goal inside 30 seconds of kick-off.

A long throw was hurled into the box and flicked on, and with none of the defence dealing with the danger, there was an easy tap-in for Sean Brettell from a yard out.

Welwyn had the ball in the net for the second time time in the 19th minute from a free-kick but it was ruled out for offside.

Green should have equalised nine minutes before the end of the first half when Jonathan Lacey floated a free-kick across the face of goal, but Curtis Davidson didn’t get enough on his header.

City had a penalty saved in the second-half as Preddy tipped the effort over the bar.

The home side finally sealed the points with a goal in the first minute of stoppage time when Ash Kersey lashed the ball into the rood of the net from a narrow angle.
