It was a triumphant weekend for Watford Fencing Club after they took home two gold medals and one bronze at the Hertfordshire Team Championship.

The team of Ian Brown, Tony Bardell, Philip Jordan and Peter Moore dominated the Epee to win gold, the first time the club has won this event since 2013.

There was another gold medal in the novice foil category where recent graduates of the club’s beginners course saw Tony Gudiens, Kirstie Mok and Harry Neville take home the top prize.

To round off the day, Florent Boyer, Marcos Gonzalez-Flower and Michael Lown achieved the bronze in foil.

This result was a challenging feat for the team at this championship.

Press Officer, Hefin Rhys, said: “We are extremely proud for a couple of reasons, the main one is the standard of fencing in the country is high and we won the Epee for the first time since 2013.

“We have our name on the shield which is a great achievement.

“Another reason is the recent graduates won the novice foil. They put up a great fight and we are extremely proud for what they have done.”

The club has won previous medals in the past but they will be looking to hold onto these titles when they return next year.

The 26-year-old added: “Next year, we hope to have more than one team in each category.

“But if we retain the Epee it will be great to have our name on the shield to years in a row.”

Fencers can join the club as they meet every Wednesday between 8pm and 10pm at the Nuffield Health Sports Complex within the grounds of Rickmansworth’s Royal Masonic School for Girls.

They also run two beginner’s courses a year which will teach keen fencers all the basics of the fast paced sport.
