Nothing has been won yet but Bovingdon’s vice-like grip on the destiny of the Herts Senior County League title tightened still further after triumphing 5-1 at Ware Sports last night.

Following on from Saturday’s late 2-1 victory over Letchworth Garden City Eagles, the Premier Division leaders have now beaten the two sides who were directly below them prior to kick-off in each game within the space of four days. The result is Lee Bircham’s side have now established a nine-point cushion with two games in hand on their closest rivals.

“We are taking nothing for granted but this was a massive six points in two games for us,” the Bovingdon boss acknowledged.

“We can’t do anything regarding other teams’ results so we just have to keep getting the points on board for us.”

Reflecting further on the victory, Bircham said: “I was really proud of the lads tonight. They are pretty much a new squad from last season but now they are really looking like they played with each other for years.

“I know it comes from winning games but there really is a good team spirit amongst them. This doesn’t come easy and the lads have worked hard for what we are currently.

“Ware are a good side, make no mistake about that but in the second half in particular we were exceptional.”

Indeed, the game did not get off to a good start for the visitors as Ware took a third-minute lead. But Bovingdon were soon back on terms; Will Summerfield side-footing home after a fine passing move.

The scores remained level at the break, but Bircham’s decision to bring on Stefan Bailey and new signing George Biggadike saw his side take control of proceedings.

They went in front five minutes after the restart when Bailey’s through ball set up Summerfield for his second with a good one-on-one finish.

Although they remained on top, the Green Lane side did not make sure of the points until the 81st minute when Kaan Fehmi tucked away his third goal in as many appearances.

The gloss was then applied as Courtney Massay and substitute Lewis Pritchard completed a superb evening’s work for the league leaders.

The two sides will do battle again in the semi-finals of the Aubrey Cup, but Bovingdon’s next stop in the league is Standon & Puckeridge – a place where they have never won.

Belstone have played even fewer league games than the table toppers, but they missed the chance to move up to fifth following a 3-2 defeat at Wormley Rovers.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, goals from Harley Ross and Darren Turner got the Radlett club on the scoresheet in the second half but it was not to be enough as Rovers moved up to third.
