Lee Bircham has acknowledged his title-winning Bovingdon side still have much to improve on, but is planning to use the final four games of the season to experiment.

Having wrapped up the Herts Senior County League title with five matches to spare by beating Bushey Sports Club on Saturday, the champions came up against the only team to beat them in the league this season on Tuesday. And once again they were unable to get the better of Sandridge Rovers as an entertaining game ended in a 3-3 draw.

The home side continued what has become an unwanted trend by conceding the first goal, but after equalising through captain Matt Standen’s 18th-minute penalty all they had to show for some fine football was a goal from Courtney Massay seven minutes before the interval.

It looked like Bovingdon might be made to rue their missed chances when Rovers turned a one-goal deficit into a one-goal advantage in the second half following some poor defending.

But manager Bircham’s decision to push Martin Standen up front alongside his brother paid off when the defender flicked on for Stefan Bailey to equalise with his 10th goal of the season with 15 minutes remaining.

“That was too open for my liking and defensively as a team on the whole we were all over the place tonight,” Bircham admitted afterwards. “Saying that we need to help the lads out at the back by having a better conversion rate on the amount of chances we are getting and not taking.

“We fell behind twice and still found a way to come back which I have to give the lads credit for. It’s the fifth time in six games we have gone 1-0 down and five times we have recovered to not lose the game; that shows we’ve got a good character about us.

“But as well as we’ve done this season we know there are lots of aspects of our game we will need to improve on next season.”

Thanking Sandridge for their “classy touch” of holding a guard of honour in recognition of Bovingdon’s title triumph, Bircham added: “We’ve got four games to go. We obviously want to win them all but we will use these games to try out some other players and things we’ve got in mind for next season.”
