Moor Park golfers Matt Wallace and Callum Shinkwin will start tomorrow's second round of the BMW PGA Championship within two shots of each other as they bid to make the halfway cut at the prestigious Wentworth event.

Wallace recovered from a disappointing start to shoot an even-par opening round in the European Tour’s first showpiece Rolex Series event of the year, while his Moor Park club-mate is two-over following a 74.

Twenty-eight-year-old Wallace began his campaign poorly by dropping three shots in the first five holes, but then reeled off three birdies in the next four to reach the turn in a level-par 35.

Playing in a high-profile group alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Ian Poulter, the Pinner golfer dropped back to one-over with a five at the par four 15th. But a birdie four at the last ensured he made an even-par 37 on the back nine to sit in a tie for 59th at the time of writing, six shots behind joint leaders Dean Burmester, Darren Fichardt and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

Bushey professional Shinkwin had been in encouraging shape at the turn after a birdie three at six had seen him reach the mid-way point of his round at one-under.

But a disappointing run of four holes saw the 24-year-old slip back down the field, as back-to-back bogeys at the par three 10th and par four 11th were followed by a six at the par four 13th.

Like Wallace though, Shinkwin finished his opening 18 holes positively with a birdie four on 18 to lie in a share of 97th place at the time of writing.
