Chairman's 'done his stint' says Boothroyd

Aidy Boothroyd has “mixed” feelings about Graham Simpson’s decision to seek to sell his shares in Watford and step down from the Vicarage Road helm.

The Hornets chairman and major shareholder of Watford Leisure Plc, Lord Michael Ashcroft, announced last week that they were to willing to sell their combined 54 per cent stake in the club’s parent company to attract new investment and “drive this club to the next level”.

“From a professional point of view I am very disappointed,” said the Hornets’ boss of Simpson’s decision. “I think that Graham is a terrific guy to work for, he is straight down the line and he’s the one that gave me my big chance.

“But from a personal point of view I think it’s the right decision. If you ask any Watford fan out there if they would put three-quarters of their life savings into the football club they would say ‘absolutely no way’,” added Boothroyd, who pointed out that during the chairman’s tenure Watford had been promoted to the Premiership, reached three cup semi-finals and had another play-off campaign, but that Simpson had “done his stint.”

But with the club now officially up for sale, it does raise the possibility of a new owner or owners wishing to install their own football management team. Boothroyd though, was pragmatic when asked about this.

“All I can do is to continue to do this job to the best of my abilities and to take this club further forward from where I found it,” he responded. “I think that anyone that comes in, it will be under the right circumstances. I don’t think Graham will cut and run because he’s a Watford fan and will have the club’s best interests at heart and want it to be the right person.

“But I have two years left on my contract and I intend to honour that unless I am told differently.”

However, there has been concern expressed by the Watford Supporters Trust at the decision of the two main shareholders on the Hornets board, particularly in the short to medium-term while a buyer is sought.

“The news that Graham Simpson and Lord Ashcroft were actively seeking a purchaser for their shares in Watford Leisure plc was received with some concern by the board of WST, as the ownership of the football club is clearly of paramount concern to members of the Trust,” a statement read. “We will be following all developments closely and will continue to keep in regular contact with Mr Simpson during this process.

“Our hope is that he is able to fulfil his expressed desire to find a buyer who has both the best interests of the club at heart and the financial resources to be able to take the club forward.

“In the interim, we share the concerns of many of our members that questions regarding the ownership and the lack of further investment will translate to a lack of progress for the club both on and off the field.”

As Aidy wasnt even here for half of GS's stint his thoughts are of interest but nothing more.

Continuing the normal spin out of WFC I note that GS has said categorically that Danny is going nowhere and Aidy says he wants to keep him. That being the case why did Danny have talks with Rangers that broke down?

Do our guys have an inbuilt desire to mislead or are they habitual liars.

I really wish they would conduct their business in private and say far less.

As for the Russos..they have said we would like an outside buyer but if the price is right they would buy the club. The only plus for them amongst their statements of it wasn't us gov is that I believe at the end of the premier year they were less inclined to give Aidy a better contract. If this is the case how right they were...that along with the promotion of one Mr Ashton who must carry a reasonable amount of the blame as I understand he is our 'top' negotiator. Albeit negotiator is a word I wouldnt link with him.

Hopefully the first day of training went well and not too many balls were burst as we practised our hoofing.

Quite right that GS should go, he gambled the East Stand money (NE, CJ etc etc) and he lost. Where does Ashton fit in all this? What has he done to justify his super salary? If he was part of the gamble to get back in Prem, he should go too as it failed.

Why all the fuss about this comment of Aidy's. However he feels about things he could not really say anything different to what he has said.

If he said that he was glad GS was going he would be out the door now, if he said I don't want GS to go he would be out the door no matter who takes over. He has to be matter of fact and just get on with the job.

If he is asked to move on by the new owners he will have a 2 year contract to be settled, but will probably then be quickly snapped up by another club anyway. Either way I don't suppose he is too worried about it.

Not sure that there was a huge amount of fuss about Aidy's comments Hex. Why he felt it necessary to speak on the subject at all. More poor judgement and as you say Hex any comment could cause him problems.

And as you also say you dont suppose he is too worried about his position. I guess on the basis that he will bank a large cheque in compensation or continue to draw a large salary.

Assuming your view is correct Hex, it speaks volumes about Aidy's lack of pride as in his position many would hope for a second chance to put last years errors right, albeit with GS's announcement I guess it gives Aidy another excuse for next season. As for his desire to take it forward, he did it once, before he found reverse gear hopefully he can find find first at least.

Wasnt ashton brought in to mainly be responsible for the stadium redevelopment??

so his 6 figure salery has been justified by selling some allotments.

he has failed his one task massively. everyone nkows the east stand is a massive embarresment to the club. I remember Mark Ashton coming on SKY to promote his wonderful idea for the east stand now he has failed surely he has to go. I would say resign but like his boss and the lord he can still collect his wages without much being said.
