Aidy Boothroyd's plans to bring in at least three new faces have been thrown up in the air after Dan Shittu’s move to Glasgow Rangers fell through this week.

Watford accepted Rangers’ bid of £2.35m for the wantaway Nigerian defender last week but the move collapsed when the Scottish giants refused to meet Shittu’s wage demands.

The 27-year-old, who scored nine goals last season, was believed to be asking in the region of £25,000 per week, while Rangers were only prepared to stretch to £20,000.

“We have not managed to reach an agreement on that one so it looks as though we are finished there now,” said Gers boss Walter Smith.

Shittu desperately tried to resurrect the deal but his statement in midweek, which blamed Rangers for the collapse of the deal, hardly endeared him to the hierarchy at Ibrox.

“They put a proposal on the table which I accepted but when it came to putting the contract in writing the deal had changed,” said Shittu.

“This is where the breakdown in talks has come as far as I’m concerned.

“I know there is other interest out there but my first choice remains Rangers and I still believe a deal can be done. I certainly haven’t closed the door on the move but it’s up to Rangers,” the Nigerian international added.

On Wednesday, Boothroyd felt the deal was not dead and has been on the phone to Smith and the player in an attempt to seek a resolution.

“Rangers came in for Danny and the bid was accepted,” said the Watford manager. “They have failed to agree terms, from what I understand.

“I don’t think the deal is dead and it may still occur. It’s one of those things where personal needs aren’t met. It’s down to a lack of communication that needs resolving by the player and the club.”

Rangers, however, have cooled their interest and are thought to have turned their attention to Glenn Loovens, the Cardiff City defender, leaving Shittu and Watford in limbo.

Shittu is currently training on his own at the UCL training ground in London Colney and is waiting to see if interest from an unnamed Premiership and Championship club turns into anything concrete.

Boothroyd is keen for Shittu to be sold after admitting the money from the sale of the big defender is vital in his attempt to bring in some new recruits.

“Yes it does,” said Boothroyd when asked if his summer spending hinges on the sale of the defender. “We can’t go and get players, unless they are free transfers or loans, until that money comes in.

“That sometimes puts you at a disadvantage as other clubs see you have had some money come in and add one or two hundred thousand to the price.”

The manager revealed that rumoured target Ian Harte was “not in my plans” while he would be priced out of a move for MK Dons skipper Keith Andrews “I like Keith a lot,” admitted Boothroyd, “but, financially, he might be a bit too far for us and I’ve got other central midfield players here.”

The manager has not ruled out the possibility of bringing in a midfielder but his priorities currently lie elsewhere.

“We need a left-sided player, to back up Jobi and push Mat Sadler,” he said. “We also need another right-back.

“That’s an area where you start most of your attacks and we need more competition there. We need a footballing right back.

“I would possibly like a central midfield but that depends on what goes on elsewhere.

“I’m quite settled with what I’ve got,” he added. “I feel we are not far away from being a real powerful force.

“We are just in need of a couple to give us strength and depth.”

You mean to say that Lloyd is not a footballing right back?

Surely if you were the player, you'd ask for a transfer.

Ry--he does not need to ask--he has already been put on the transfer list. Though Doyley is an excellent defender he is not an attacking full-back in the modern mold. He rarely gets forward or delivers a telling forward pass. I would be pleased to see him stay for his defensive qualities, but it is unarguable that there is room for improvement at right back. Here is a suggestion that will be laughed at--could Tommy Smith convert to right back? He already does defensive duties very well and is an intelligent player. Recall that Wilf Rostron made the transfer from winger to left back under Taylor, with great success. Smith at full back and Ainsworth in front of him would give opposition left backs a lot to think about. But what do I know?

Erhh....do your plans include someone who can put the ball in the net? Quite a vital quality that in a football match. Why waste limited money on fringe players? Or players who are only going to warm the bench?

What have we got up front? (and i don't want to hear about that pathetic joke who scored a few times for Hereford - even i could do that...with my eyes closed) Priskin? A proven useless wimp and a flop. Henderson? Crap and locked into an expensive long term deal.

We need a striker you useless cretin!

Dear me...

I have just signed up to comment on here but don't think I'll bother if Colin is the usual standard of poster on here..

So what level of football have you played with your eyes open then?

Think I'll go back to 606/Gloryhorns and WFC forums - at least you can have a real debate and even arguements with grown ups.

I cannot see us spending any money of note really and with Aidy's record that might not be a bad thing!

Maybe get in a couple of experience loan players as most of our back-up players are either unwanted or untested at this level.

I am not expecting much more than mid-table..

WFC--yes, Colin is a regular poster but is so predictable you scarcely need to read his contributions, unless you want a laugh. He is sometimes amusing, though rarely sensible, and on occasion so insulting about Simpson/Boothroyd et al that the Observer is obliged to remove his efforts. There are some sensible contributors to this forum and a few more would be welcome.

Like you I do not expect many new faces to join the club this season, since cost cutting is currently the order of the day , but unlike you I am hopeful of a top 6 finish, if Boothroyd is allowed to see through his restructuring of the team and tactics. Important is to get some momentum going and a feeling of unity between team, fans and management; a good start is essential. Let us take stock 10 games in.

We'll be ok and I still remain confident on the season ahead even if we don't sign anymore players, infact I believe it would be a bonus if we do keep him, then he'll sign a new contract when we win at wembley.
Happy days ahead clappers...Believe!!

I fully understand people knocking Boothroyd over certain issues and I have in the past along with some praise.

However are making claims like "I could have scored for Hereford with my eyes closed" and calling people "cretin" is not really adding much to the debate and the sort of comment that gets message boards closed down because the club threaten libel stuff (see MB saga on Official site)

Anyway hopefully all this doom and gloom will make Aidy and the players more motivated to perform better and produce a more attactive style (we are never going to be a top Premiership side) but a solid stable club with a half decent team would be nice.

|I cant believe we will willingly let one of our most if not our most talented player go. However training on his own will not be good for anyone.

When I read earlier that Boofers wanted him to stay i thought Aidy, you are learning. Now he wants the cash but cant get the deal done it smacks of yet another WFC mess. Not because the breakdown between Rangers and the player occurred but because until a deal was fully agreed Shittu should have been in Austria and then flown back for his glasgow meeting. It would have meant he would have missed two days of the pre friendly training not all of it.

Yet again the clubs managing of a situation falls flat.

Maybe they (GS/MA/AB)should be referred to as the mismanagers.

All this and GS wanting to sell with Lord A, another wonderful start to a season...what a bunch!!

Chris--your negativism is almost on a par with Colin, though at least you do not use the same sort of insulting language, and I sense that you might respond thoughtfully to reasoned argument, whereas he is incorrigable.So--I am sure Watford are not "willingly" selling Shittu, but he has made it clear he wants away for higher wages than we can offer him. Do we deny him a transfer and have a resentful player in the dressing room all season? Should we wait till he goes on a free transfer at the end of his current contract, when we get nothing for him? By selling him now we do lose an effective player (not the most talented, since error prone at times) but we can finance a couple of transfers that might just improve the overall quality of the squad. Normal business I would have thought, and hardly managerial incompetence. As for him going to Austria or not, how can we ousiders possibly comment on that level of managerial decision--you will be criticising what they have for breakfast next. Get on board and support the team , in what is going to be an interesting season at the very least.

Roger you are a tedious and a predictable bore. Your views come straight out of the GS spin manual.

WHERE HAS ALL THE MONEY GONE?

Why aren't you so called "true" fans demanding an inquest? You're letting this board get away with murder i say, so stop being such a sycophant and get on their cases!

Roger undoubtedly your misunderstanding arises from two points.

First and foremost I will and do support the team...but I also want to see WFC move forward as a cohesive unit which can be done with good management on and off the field. Last year, in particular, we came up short in both areas. This is not said with hindsight last year it was said in these threads.

Secondly your comments on Danny are correct BUT he outscored any of the others from November on and when he was replaced by De Merit in the last game Mr USA gave away or was complicit in giving away all 4 goals. Selling Danny is not a good option and as for him being unhappy..whatever happened to man management. We are told why players sign for us due to Aidy...but many dont and even more worringly he seems to fall our with an awful lot of players and backroom staff.

At the end of the day most if not all of us want the team to do well but an awful lot of fans yourself included appear to paper over the cracks instead of wanting to get the basics right.Unless of course I have misunderstood your comments

Watford Observer instead of a poll on the russo's coming back

do a poll on a enquiry into watford fc and its financial situation.

Promises have been broken, Lies have been told. With overwhelming support for a enquiry the board would have to speak up.

Chris--thanks for a courteous response. You have not misunderstood my arguments, but we do disagree. We agree that Boothroyd lost the plot in the second part of last season, but I think that he is capable of learning, is still an asset to the club not a liability and has earned the opportunity to restucture the squad and to try again. I get the impression you think he is incorrigable and should be sacked. As for Shittu, I do not think "man-management" is the issue. Money is the issue. He knows (or thinks) he can get higher wages elsewhere and will be plotting a move until he gets this. Every club sees succesful players move on for higher wages (Arsenal, Spurs, Man U) which is not evidence that Wenger et al are bad at man management. I agree that Boothroyd seems less adept at managing a large squad with a big wage differential than he was at managing a smaller squad on more equal wages, but again I expect him to have learned from this. His main fault in man management seems to be his exagerated belief that he can turn around players with a chequered past. I hope he has learned this lesson too. He can't. Of course I may change my views if we are bottom of the league at Christmas, but untill then I will remain a Simpson/Boothroyd supporter (but not a naive one I hope).

Colin--no thanks for your typically ungracious response which exceeds anything I could say for tediousness and predictability.

Roger..I cant say that things are improving much as every article seems to bring further bad news and doubts.

It appears to me that in reality (ignoring Boofers and GS) we are having to sell players to a value of £6m and cut wages even more through loans and freebies. If the loan fee for Ellington was so good and Shittu goes for £1.5m and Doris for a bit more we are nearing the target.

Trouble is rejects of previous seasons like Hoskins and Priskin are going to carry our hopes.

I think GS did a good job for us but his decision to sell (tory lord involved?) and the timing of the announcement are not good. The fire sale of hendo who apparently wants to stay and Aidy apparently wants him to must give cause for concern.

I think the management are selling us short and if they dont get out before the AGM I suspect it will make last years seem like a tea party.

I sincerely hope you are proved right and that results go our way but as you say by Christmas we will have a good idea but by then it may be too late
